RIDE INFO

The Tri-County Hill Hopper is a BP MS 150 Recommended Ride with three route options available: 20, 36 or 67 miles. Each route provides a hilly ride complemented by some flats. The ride starts at 9 am and the last route sweep is at 3 pm.

Routes

Participants can choose one of three hilly routes of approximately 20, 36 or 67 miles through the scenic Round Top area within the counties of Fayette, Colorado and Austin. Routes and distances may change somewhat from one year to the next due to road conditions or other considerations.  NOTE: By skipping the “loop” on the 67 route you can make a 58 mile route.

Safety and Rules

All riders must wear approved helmets and follow the rules of the road. No headphones allowed. Rest stops will offer restroom facilities, refreshments, mechanical support, and minimal first aid. SAG vehicles will patrol the routes and offer transportation for riders and bicycles when needed. An emergency vehicle will be on call for the duration of the ride. All routes will be clearly marked with appropriate signage.

WHAT: A MS150 training ride and family ride. This event is open to persons of all fitness levels.

BENEFICIARY:  All proceeds from the Baytown Family YMCA Gator Ride benefit the Baytown Family YMCA. YMCA programs help improve and enrich the lives of so many in our community. The Baytown Family YMCA is proud to bring people together for this event that helps develop the individual and, in turn, strengthens the community as a whole.

“The Family Crisis Center invites you to our 11th Annual Pedal Thru The Pines for a fun-filled cycling event that directly supports the programs and service offered by the Center. This year cyclists will enjoy riding the country roads of Bastrop, Fayette and Lee Counties that are close to the parks. The routes provide a unique experience for cyclists of every level. Well stocked rest stops, friendly volunteers and a top notch veteran SAG Team add to the success of this event.

Each year, the Center orders t-shirts for cyclists riding in Pedal Thru The Pines. A t-shirt will be available for cyclists who pre-register for the event. T-shirts and packets can be picked up by pre-registered cyclists the day of the event beginning at 6:30 AM. T-shirts for cyclists who register the day of the event will be distributed, based on availability, after the ride. For cyclists registering on the day of the event, it is not possible for us to guarantee a shirt, or shirt of your desired size.

The gentle hills of Colorado and Fayette Counties offer cyclists a unique setting not found in bike rides around the Houston area. Cyclists will also discover very little vehicle traffic on the routes.

Commonly referred to as the “Gateway to the Hill Country,” Columbus is conveniently located at the junction of Highway 71 and 1-10, seventy miles west of Houston, 90 miles southeast of Austin and 120 miles east of San Antonio.

Starting Point:
The Rolling Hills Challenge will begin at Colorado County Beason’s Park on the east bank of the Colorado River.

From Houston (traveling west on I-10): Take the 698 exit and follow Hwy. 90 towards Columbus. Beason’s Park will be on your left prior to crossing the Colorado River bridge.

From San Antonio (traveling east on I-10): Take the Columbus 696 exit, turn left under the freeway and go north on Business Hwy 71, veer to the right on Spur 52 to downtown Columbus. Turn right at the red light on to Walnut and continue until you cross the Colorado River bridge. Beason’s Park will be on your right.

From Austin (traveling south on Hwy-71): Take the Columbus Business Hwy 71 exit and turn left under the highway. Follow Business Hwy 71 across the Colorado River into Columbus. Pass under the railroad tracks and turn left at Walnut / Hwy 90 (first red light). Continue east on Walnut and continue until you cross the Colorado River bridge. Beason’s Park will be on your right.

Riders can register on the day of the ride from 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

Fees:

Pre-registration is $35 per person and includes a T-shirt, if received by Wednesday, May 1.  Tandem pre-registration is $55.  T-shirts are not guaranteed for entry forms received after the May 1st deadline.

On the day of the ride, the registration fee is $40 per person and $65 Tandem.

All riders will receive an after-ride meal.

Children under 12 ride free and do not receive a T-shirt.  A T-shirt can be purchased for $10.

On-site registration will be accepted until 9:00 a.m. Ride will take place rain or shine. Sorry, no refunds.

Rest Stops:

Stops are available about every 15 miles along the route with refreshments and portable toilets.  Roving vehicles will travel the routes to assist riders, but riders should be equipped to fix flats and do minor repairs.  Emergency medical assistance will be provided by the Colorado County EMS.

Safety:

The cyclists’ safety is a concern of the organizers of the Rolling Hills Challenge 2013.  Cyclists are expected to obey the rules of the road and honor all traffic signs and lights.  Cyclists will also be asked to form a single line to allow vehicles to pass.  Use of an ANSI or SNELL approved bicycle helmet is strongly recommended.

Start times are ride out times.  Please arrive early to be ready for the start of each ride.  Routes are marked with signs adn color arrows on the road.
 
Support:  Rest stops are supplied with fruit, drinks and snacks.  SAG wagons are available for the weary.  The ride is fully supported with police, motorcycles and ride marshals along the routes.
